Our school is slightly paranoid about who they let into advanced classes, though I think they've gotten a bit lax about that in recent years.

That's Mrs. Voight's logic for you...flawed and unequally distributed.

She is also a perfectist too.
I know from past experts that sometimes the song doesn't need to be perfect to be great. But most time it is the energy and feeling it that song that makes it great.
Mrs. Voight and perfectist's ways drives that energy right out of the best songs.

It is okay to want things to be perfect, but there is a point where someone can go insane and make people hate something that they originally liked/loved.

ok...to continue where I left off in ROTW
the Nightmare Before Christmas (by dark-theme genius; Tim Burton) is my favorite non-Anime movie- above all other American films i've seen (certain ones come close- in both the real, and animated). From an artist's perspective, i've looked for something new and different- an original idea; that's one of the major reasons I like it: the movie's look has since never been truly copied- the claymation was masterfully done. The worlds were all very dark, twisty- with lots of swirls, many angular shapes as well- it just made an atmosphere perfect for the film. Story-wise, it may have been trippy to some, but it was still classic material: hero (Jack Skellington-Pumpkin King) has ruled over Halloween for ages, without fail to strike pure horror into his victims. Alas- he has grown tired of it- the sounds of screams, the praise...etc. So he wanders off to clear his head- and stumbles upon the doorways to the holiday worlds...and is drawn in to the door of Christmas Town (each Holiday has its own corresponding town)- finds the inspiration he needs...and attempts to make a Christmas in his own way...and fails- that's the basis of the story- a hero who is basically figuring out that sometimes...you should stick with what you're good at (I can feel that message) and has a heroine who keeps her faith in him knowing what the hero is trying to find out. Then there's the music...ahh the music...I can't even describe the soundtrack- the opening piece is always playing in my mind- and all the songs (its a musical movie, equal parts song and dialogue; well placed and balanced) are terrific!- i'm getting the rare soundtrack for Christmas ;D I'm also trying to find the DVD...my VHS I watch at least twice EVERY weekend...is wearing down. It's a wonderful movie, in my opinion- and for anyone who's interested- i'll let ya' borrow it.
okay...that's all my ranting and raving for today

I think the Nightmare Before Christmas is great!!!
But that not what i was going to say. A few people mentioned that they hate claymation. And i have a thing to say to about that. A truely great movie, it would not matter what style it is created in. The storyline should be able to stand on its own. You should give all movies a chance. If it is in a style you don't like, give it 20-30 minutes, and if the storyline is not enought to make you stay, then at least you can truely give it a chance. And then you will also have a better reason for not liking it, other than you don't like that style.

I was the one that said I don't like claymation ;D
Firstly, I disagree. Personally, visuals are a major portion of a movie- If I wanted to experience a storyline or characters, I'd read a book. If the visuals are lacking, then the movie in general is, as far as I'm concerned.
Secondly, by saying I don't like claymation, I mean I REALLY don't like claymation. As in... it scares me. The way they move... the way they look... it inspires frightful thoughts. Dunno why, just one of those things about me.
Also, I did watch the whole of this particular movie, and as I said, the best thing I can say about it is its a whole lot of nothing. It really dosn't have any kind of established storyline or universe... Some guy in Halloween land does some stuff over in christmas land... or something. Animation aside, I still didn't like the movie.
But then again, it's REALLY not my cup of tea, so I'm a little biased ;D

I'm in agreement with Pix (thank you by the way, for the support - I knew somebody shared my opinion)- I judge movies by story (visuals are important of course: I draw- but their not necessarily a super high priority to me)- if the story can stand- I can watch it. The Nightmare Before Christmas' story is indeed a little basic, I will honestly say that, but I can completely understand the character of Jack, one whose become so known for what he does...he wishes he could do something else. So my being able to emotionally connect with it plays a major role- I loved the story to the movie, and the way it was told. oh, and not to dodge any commentary, but maybe this is a good time to talk about everyone's favorite movie while we're at it...after all, mine's already being discussed (unless you've already done this before)

i don't like clamation, i think its a cheap way to make a movie and it looks awful. when i rate a movie i look at special effects, some acting, storyline, and a universe.
now most people now my taste in movies and its pretty big, but i only recomend realy good movies and when i recomend a movie its a great one, ask will, i don't think i've ever rcomened a movie to him that he didn't like. same goes for anyone else i've recomened a movie to. now my family is huge on movies, if you named a movie i'm sure someone in my family has it.
now as far as a favorite movie is concerned, i don't think i have one favorite movie, but if i had to pick one, its would be SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT.
