Hey! Hi! I'm alive! What's up? I've got a car, a 22" moniter, a Playstation 3, Metal Gear Solid 4, Soul Calibur 4, and a job in the electronics department of Wal-Mart! Hey, pretty cool. Discussion is picking back up here, on and off, more and less. But people are talking again, which is nice. Nice to see you here again too ;D When I worked at target I always wanted to be in the electronics section, but they told me I couldn't. They said I wasn't special enough, I didn't play my games hard enough, that I'd never have a chance to do something like that. Now I'm a game technician! So they can bite me! How is working at wal-mart? They pay more then target so our managers would always tell us horror stories that its a terrible terrible place and we shouldn't go there, ever. (Then when I worked at Toys R Us, they said the same thing about Target )

Wal-Mart pays more than Target? Curses, cus I was thinking about gettin a job at Target. But even if they do pay more, I'm still gonna stay away from working at the Wal-Mart next to my house. It would just feel weird.

I <3 Segata Sanshiro forever!! Get that song and give it to me, Will, you big meanie. I've just been slaving away at Shop Rite, where they treat the employees like soulless animals and the guy who hired me is some old Puerto Rican guy who has been working there since he was 16 and only hires pretty young girls so he can flirt with them. Good times all around. But it's money, and that's what I need. And now school is starting soon. I've started doing yoga as well. It's so much fun to do but it's also so much of a workout. I really had no idea it could be so intense to just breathe certain ways or to just stretch in different ways, but it is really an intense workout for your muscles. I love it to death. And my puppy is a big boy now. He's not a year old yet but he's full grown. Silly as ever, of course, and getting sillier every day.

Not sure where people get the stories about Wal-Mart being a terrible horrible nightmare place. Of course, last summer I worked with my dad, who yells, curses, demands physical labor(hes a carpenter), and didn't pay a whole lot. In comparison, at Wal-Mart I stand around and talk to people about computers, the heaviest thing I need to lift is a TV, and my department head and managers can't even raise their voice to me. Oh, and the pay is pretty decent (electronics is one of the highest paid departments, short of being salaried).
I have heard it's a lot different in the years since Sam Walton died. Some of the older employees have told me that the company has drifted away from the "human element" in recent years, I guess focusing more on the stock price than the people. Still not too bad of a company to work for as far as I've seen in three months.

I heard once that Wal-mart never hires people full-time so they don't have to pay for benefits.

You ever watch Dateline's episode on Wal-Mart? It's got the whole argument of how its saving America while also slowly destroying it from the inside. But the culprits are the ones in charge of the company. Its an interesting story if anyone's curious

I heard once that Wal-mart never hires people full-time so they don't have to pay for benefits. This is true of nearly every big time chain store, however. I wouldn't say they never hire full time. . . but it's definitely something you have to earn.

I dunno. All I know is, after working at a grocery store, I don't think I'd ever work at a grocery store or a Wal-mart type of place ever again. I get short changed on scheduled hours, but then they're calling me up almost every damn day asking me to come in either earlier than I was scheduled or to come in and work on a day I wasn't scheduled for. I'm not about to sit around the phone all day and wait and see if they need me to come in. It's ridiculous.

Dunno, I've never been called in early or late or anything like that. Just work my hours, then I go home.
The main thing you (Francis!) gotta understand is it's retail. You've always got a manager coming up with dumb ideas that he thinks will work great, but in actuality are a huge pain in the ass. Example: we have keys to the mp3 and video games cases, and forever they went on magnets underneath the register. One day, a region manager saw it and flipped out (not safe, etc). Now we have to carry the keys around in our pockets. Problem with this? It's always hard to find the guy with the keys, people might be in the back room or the break room and not realize they have the keys, we had a guy almost go to lunch for an hour with em once.
I guess the point is, you've got a manager who doesn't actually work in the department making decisions. Sometimes, his decisions are foolish, pointless, or both -- but you still gotta roll with them.

Or, in my case, your manager is too stupid to think of any ideas of his own, but instead is a disgusting old man who only hires pretty young girls to work so he can flirt with them.

Lets see... at target the biggest problems we had was also stuff "from above". For example, we were told that the managers aren't allowed to write our schedules any more, that a new computer system they're installing to "maximize efficiency" was now going to write all of our schedules. They even named the computer "max". Max decided me working one day a week (along with a couple other employees) while about four or five people worked double overtime would be the most effective course. When we started to complain their excuse was simply "Its from corporate, nothing I can do" and so the schedule was for over a month... when they told corporate about the trouble they sent us a copy/pasted letter telling us how much stronger our store will be once max is installed and the managers didn't have to balance our schedules manually. Its like everyone higher up was in some other world... It was really annoying to be part of that machine, too. They were constantly on us to be faster, be faster, be faster... etc. Kind of annoying. At Toys R Us it was much better, at least for the night crew. Our managers worked with us directly on our duties. Its the same at my current job, the managers are all on the floor with us, including the GM, and even RGMs at most stores like ours. (GM= General Manager, and RGM is Regional GM, they're essentially the ones who 'own' the stores). Speaking of jobs, I'm now the ranking standard tech at my store. Weeee. We have two Senior Techs, which is a different position that doesn't usually work with us directly, but they're the only ones above me now. Actually it kinda sucks because we're getting so many new guys, and I'm already held responsible for everyone else's work... people who actually knew what they were doing...
