OK, let me explain a little more. The leader is not nessicerilly going to be the main character. However, in battle, the leader is probably going to have to make descisions on battle plans, tactics, etc. Everyone will control their own characters, but the leader will probably come up with plans of sorts. Additionally, since the leader is the strongest class, it is going to be expected of you to take on the most dificult chalenges, as well.
I will control the enemies, as well as do all damage calculations, record experience points, etc. It's a pretty complex system, but I will be keeping track of it all, so you guys don't have to worry about anything. This will mean, however, that the RPG won't be able to run if I'm not posting. But not to worry... even if this RPG is slow, you have other ones to go to.
Now, as for your characters...
Your backstory is almost set for you. You enrolled at a military academy. You can choose your true backstory, but you won't have much choices, because you enrolled at a young age (9 or 10).
Seven years later. The class you enrolled into, our class, is graduating. A peasent rebellion happens to come around at the same time, and this is where the stroy starts. Our characters, fresh out of the academy, are sent to help stop the riots. Let's say, things don't go as planned.
Character's won't be able to have their own storylines, and your backstory must be relativly normal.
However, you will have so many choices in customizing your character. You start with two classes, Cadet and Alchemist, and as you level up, you unlock more classes. Depending on what you level up in, you will unlcok diferent classes: Leveling up as a cadet unlocks knight, and leveling as a knight unlocks Monk and Thief... Theif unlocks archer, while monk unlocks Samurai. The classes start to branch out.
Plus, you can form seceret classes, by combining two or more normal classes. For example, if you level as a Theif and a Samurai, you will unlock Ninja. All in all, there are 30 classes.
Then, each class has abilitys. Anywhere from 4, to some mages have up to 20 spells... And as you gain these abilities, you will be able to combine them with your other classes... for example, you could become a theif and learn 'steal', then become a monk- a monk who knows how to use the ability 'steal'.
It might sound complex at first, but it is actually prety simple when you sit down and try and use it. Anyone who has played Final Fantasy 5, or Final Fantasy tactics, will already know the basics.
