Hey guys, check this out, my bro did a speech in his class on how video games are beneficial. Check it out, here it is in essay form:
Speech #1 Jon-Raoul Acupan
Video games…video games are computerized games in which a player or players control images on a display screen. Ever since the first massively successful video game in 1972 titled “PONG,” in which a digital block was passed back and forth between two pedals, the video game industry has become very successful. In addition video games have advanced and even to this very day, video games are a source of entertainment for all types of people and different age groups. Generally video games can be played on consoles such as Play-station, n64, game-cube, played in arcades, computers, or in simulations. Video games are also labeled under different types such as action/adventure, sports, racing/driving, fighting, puzzle/strategy, role-playing, shooter, rhythm/dance and educational. The argument that I propose is that video games are beneficial in a diversity of ways and that they are more than just games and forms of entertainment. First of all, video games are a great way of keeping people occupied if you have nothing else to do or if you’re in a boring situation. Say for example, you are waiting for some one to pick you up or maybe you’re waiting for the laundry to dry. You can pull out a portable handheld game such as “game boy” and keep your interest while waiting. Video games build hand eye coordination and spatial skills. A person must be able to control the movement of an object in the game while also pressing the right buttons or executing the right set of movements and motions, whether it is your hands or feet. It may also involve accuracy and timing. For example, DDR or Dance Dance Revolution, a rhythm/dance game, requires that you have great hand-eye coordination. You need to follow the rhythm of music and watch for certain dance moves or a set of moves while also pressing or stepping on the right buttons at the right time. This may be difficult for some people at first but the more a person plays or practices, the greater the chance of doing better…not to mention you get some exercise from it too. A variety of video games can promote logical thinking and problem solving. For example, some video games require a person to read in order to gather clues and facts to determine what to do, in order to advance in the game. Other games may require the person’s ability to memorize, organize, or be able to determine the difference between shapes and colors. TETRIS is one example where a player needs to position blocks in a certain arrangement so that other blocks may disappear to make room for more blocks. Video games also promote the use of strategy. Strategy games use logical thinking in order to overcome opponents. Important steps need to be thought through before actually decisions are made. An example where you would have this would be chess, sports, or army oriented video games. You need strategy, the right set of moves, the right set of players or units, and the right movements at the right time. Video games can train people through simulations. These simulations can be used by institutions, such as those used to train astronauts, tank drivers, airline pilots, and in driving schools. In the military, video and computer simulations are common. They help officers learn military strategy. In flight training, pilots who are enrolled in airlines and military do some training on computer flight simulators. Astronauts train on simulators before actual missions. Video games can be educational for children. These types of games are designed to teach, and the main objective involves the learning of a lesson, in a game like format. It helps children to follow directions and also introduces computer technology to them. It also gets the children involved since its fun and educational at the same time. For example, the video game “Mario teaches typing” allows children to type and the video game title “Math Blasters” teaches kids numbers and the basics of math. Some games are used in therapeutic and medical applications and can actually improve health. For a while doctors have used biofeedback, or a technique in which a conscience attempt is made to control bodily functions that are considered involuntary, as heart or blood pressure, as a way to help control stress and tension. Now, NASA technology combines this technique of biofeedback with the hand-eye coordination of video games. Researchers at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va., have experimented and the results may actually improve and protect a player’s mental and physical health. They also found that video games have the potential to help both children and adults with a variety of health problems from concentration difficulties to physical stress. Early video game biofeedback studies and results suggested that the technology is effective. The combination of playing video games or receiving brainwave biofeedback is being applied as a treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder within children between the ages of 9 and 14. Both forms of treatment help the children’s symptoms, but the video game treatment seems to have distinct advantages since it gives the child motivation and enjoyment. Video games promote social activity among friends, family, and other people. Some video game consoles and computer games provide multiplayer capabilities in which more than one person can play at the same time. Friends and other people can be socially active and enjoy each others company. New friendships can be made through this as well, since there is a connection or similar interest between two or more people. In addition, video games can provide occasions for adults and children to play together and actually promote family bonding. Overall, Video games are positive, beneficial in many aspects and in many ways. Video games can be diverse in that any person of any age group can use it.
