((Well, let's see...
*WARNING- Unnessicerily long and technical rant! Read at your own risk! If you don't want to read all this, you can skip down to "In conclusion...", which sums it up, although in much less detail

The grenades would be the loudest of anything. Yes, you can hear desert eagles from a long way away.
But if your indoors, guns sound very different then they do outdoors. If there is nothing between you and the gun (say, its down the hall from you, or on the other side of a door), there is a fast, quick "BANG!"- no echoes, and its a lot shorter and louder then normal. However, if there is something between you and the gun- say, a floor or wall, then it is muffled a lot more then you might think. It could pass off for something going 'bump'- even for large guns. I've heard assault and even machinegun (semi-auto only, of course...) class weapons go off, but they were a level below me, and I at first thought it was someone rearanging furniture or something. However... there wern't that many shots (it wasn't a firefight, after all), and so many guns going off might sound suspisious. Still, most people don't say "Ahh! Gun fight!" They'll want to avoid that conclusion. They'd be more like "What was that?" "Was there a fight?" "Did something just break?"... you know.
A silencer does a lot of things. Firslty, an MP5A1 isn't intergally silenced- an MP5SD is. An MP5A1 has an add-on silencer. But that's not a big deal... just a little name mix up (there are a
LOT of MP5s, after all). A gun with a built-in silencer, like an MP5SD, does what you think a silencer does- make the gun silent- if your using sub-sonic, or 'cold loaded', ammo. If you are using normal bullets in it, though, then the bullet itself isn't silent- only the gun. In effect, this makes it so you can hear gunshots- but you can;t tell wich direction its coming from, you can only hear the bullets sonic boom as the speed by, and that sound dosn't come from the same direction as the gun.
That alone would be a good enough reason to use a silenced weapon- If it takes you even 1 second to figure out which direction the bullets are coming from, even 1 second, then you're already at a major disadvantage. Even if you already know there's someone somewhere in the building shooting, if you can't pinpoint the source...
With cold loaded ammo, the only noise an MP5SD makes is the sound of the hammer going "clickclickclick" as it hits the bullets. Cold loaded ammo isn't hard to come by... its legal for civilians to own, at least... so a dedicated underworld thug could get their hands on it if they so desired. If someone is shooting at you with a totally silent gun, the only real indication are the bullets hitting the wall or whatever else is in their way- which is really the last thing you are watching for when you think you might be in danger.
Guns with add-on silencers aren't as good at hiding the sound as ones with intergal silencers.
Silencers have disadvantedges, though... the bullets are much slower, and therefore, lose a lot of penetration value and range. Peircing body armor with silenced weapons is very dificult. Even direct shots with a silenced gun to the torso probably won't kill them. You could also survive a head shot, from longer ranges (unless its, like, dead center, of course). Still, a gunshot must hurt like a bi**ch, although I wouldn't know that from experience.
In conclusion... there are reasons you would use a silencer, even if the enemy already knew you were there- becuase, even if you are using supersonic bullets, a silencer masks the
location of the gunfire, even if you can hear the bullet's sonic boom (which dosn't sound like its coming from the same direction as the gun itself). It gives you the element of surprise, maybe even if the enemy is suspecting you.
And here's some totally off-topic info about MP5s, since those are the specific weapons in question:
SEF trigger: The selector is labeled SEF: S fo safety, E for semi, and F for auto. No burst.
Pictographic trigger: This is the newer one. It shows little pictures instead- An X for safety, one bullet for semi, three for burst, and seven for auto. Also, these controls are on the left and right of the gun.
The MP5A ranges from A1 to A5- The MP5SD ranges from SD1 to SD6- Numbers designate trigger and stock patterns. The MP5/10 fires 10mm instead of 9mm. The MP5/40 fires .40cal bullets. The MP5-n or MP5 Navy is specially made for US navy SEALs, and is very small. The MP5K is a PDW (inbetween submachingun and pistol) varient of the weapon, also very small.
Also, if characters are on the black market, the UMP 45 is
cheaper[i/] version of the MP5 that fires .45cal ammo... and there's also a civilian legal version (called USC 45)... and its also what I use in R6, so you know its good ;D))

((what'd you guys say I do a 'guide to realistic RP'? I have tons of this useless info. And not just about guns... I know a lot about the realistic nature of swords and armor. I could just start dumping tons of technical information in there, and if there's ever a quesiton about realism, people could just look there. of course, we'd keep adding on to it as we go, and more questions are asked, and I find new sources of info...
Well... mainly just 'cuase I love writing about this kind of stuff. ;D))
