-----enjoy----- Extra Textual PhysicsFrancis Acupan Block C 2-26-04 PIE: The Mind-Boggling Light Guns Now how many people have ever played “Duck Hunt”, a game on the original 8-bit Nintendo system that required a “light gun”, and stopped to wonder how those darn light guns worked? For years, as a young child I loved to play this game. In my ignorance I never really thought much about the details. But now that I am older and wiser I have begun to do just that and when you really stop to think about it, this old technology really messes with your head. How does the TV know when you hit a duck? There’s nothing special hooked up to it. You’re just pointing this light gun towards the screen and it works. Maybe it’s something inside the gun? Well finding the answers to these questions boggled my mind even more. It’s like my whole theory on life has changed because of this -- For you see, it is not the gun that shoots at the screen, it is the screen that shoots at the gun! Now how can this be, you ask. It’s one of the oldest tricks in the book (considering this stuff was created in the 80’s…). The answer is so simple too, you’ll kick yourself once you hear it. Have you ever noticed that whenever you pull the trigger, the screen blinks? What happens is it turns the screen black for a second and then momentarily creates a white figure of your target. If your aim is true, a photo sensor inside the gun detects this shift from black to white and tells the computer you got a hit. And bingo – dead duck. So in other words, the screen emits a light pulse and the gun detects it, not the other way around. This dark-to-light shift also prevents you from cheating by pointing the gun at a steadily shining light source. Amazing…

Someone taught me that, but I can't remember who. I think it was either Joe or cousine Bobby.

I prefer to remain in the dark about such technology. That way, I can more easily worship the Computer and Video Game deities, without having to worry about all this "technology" stuff.
By the way, awesome Francis!

Scary, isn't it? Sometimes, IRL, I don't think people know my name because I don't hear it much, other than from teachers and adults. o.O

Actually, I rarely hear my real name. My friends teachers and coaches all call me Burd, you guys call me Tass. I think only my parents call me Adam. Its almost wierd when somebody calls my real name, it throws me off

Man, I almost never hear my name either. I'm so unused to it, whenever I hear it, I go in to catatonic shock...

Actually, Cass, don't you always get called Cass, not Cassiday? That's a nickname...unlike Heather. I mean, what kind of nickname do you get from that? :sigh:
