Firstly, we have a bunch of reletives in florida who lost their homes. A lot of them.
Secondly, cass, we arn't looking for an alien race who is trying to get in contact with us. If that would happen, we'd pick it up clear as day.
We're trying to find evidence of another culture as advance, or at least almost advanced, as we are. For example, if there is another species out there that uses radio communication, we'd try to look for and find the radion transmisions from their planet- even if the transmisions arn't meant to be coming toward us.
Like, some of our TV stations, satalite communications, etc etc are strong enough to pick up, although faint, from other star systems.
'Random Radio Waves' might not be a good way to say "Hey guys, Look over here!!" But its a good way to send short range communications, television, etc. And if we found something like that, its just as good as saying "Look! We're intelegent!". We're just trying to find any paterns, waves, or emissions of any kind that arn't natural.
The chances of us finding a race more advanced then us is basically zero. If there was a more advanced race out there, they'd've contacted us. We're looking for less advanced races.
Even IF we did find another race, it wouldn't mean much. We'd be so far apart, seeing eachother would be impossable, and communication would be difficult at best.
Still, wouldn't it be nifty if we started e-mailing eachother .jpgs and stuff saying "And these are what our trees look like! How 'bout you guys?"

The chances of us finding a race more advanced then us is basically zero. If there was a more advanced race out there, they'd've contacted us. We're looking for less advanced races. I wouldnt say zero. They could be a few hundred years ahead of us and still not be able to contact us. Like humans in a few hundred years are expected to be all over the solar system, but we probably still wont have a way to travel to other systems, it just takes to long. So same thing with any alien cultures. Advanced, but not enough that they can reach or contact us.

Well, if they're more advanced, they'd be able to broadcast messages into space, or at least recieve ours... that's what I mean...

If they were more advanced, they'd detect our communications and obliterate us. If someone less advanced contacted us, we'd make a ship to contact them, but it would end up in 'failure' (aka, obliteration of the enemy.). So, obliterate or be obliterated!
Why, obliterate us, you may ask? Well if an empire gets big enough to multi state-governed solar system, an alien could independently launch his own assault on earth for its resources. How could he do it independently? He governs a SOLAR SYSTEM. The only way to communicate with his fellow aliens would take 50 years. So, some maniacal alien could invade us, and it would take 5-50 years for his fellows to know about it and act. By then, it might be a tad bit late... As it would take quite a while to get to us

yeah, but who says they'd do that. Like, just becuase a country COULD capture the world, dosn't mean they will.
And besides, aliens might have totally different psychology.
