This Friday had been interesting for me as well. I didn't make any plans than go to work in the morning and then sleep afterwards, but then tons of stuff kept happening afterwards. First, Cory Booker, the mayor of Newark came to my campus for some political science meeting, then there was a musical performance in our campus theater (which was pretty entertaining) and then right across the street from my dorm house all day a JC Penny commercial was being shot with a full video crew and everything. They completely transformed the street into a winter christmas thing with snow and everything, completely blocked off the entire street too. They were there the entire day they've been filming in the city for the past 3 days. Really interesting stuff. Took photographs of everything.

Recently switched from Firefox to Opera and I must say. . . I think I'm hooked. I was having some hanging problems with Firefox, which was why I was looking around for something new, and remembered seeing Opera on a few of the Bloomfield computers (I think, memory might be shoddy). Anyways, its working out pretty well. Took a day or two to get used to the change, but its going alright.
I ran 10k yesterday! Finished the Pit Run, a race that raises money for police officer's families in honor of a guy who died breaking up a robbery while off duty. And, since Oneonta is known as "The City of the Hills" . . . it was a rough 10k, let me tell you. I'm pretty sore.

Makes you sad? They (the city) are taking affirmative action against them (The boy scouts) for discriminating against gays.

The part that makes me sad is this part:
The Supreme Court ruled in 2000 that Scouts, as a private group, have a First Amendment right to bar gays from membership.

yes, thats what I mean. yay for the city for doing something about it, but the fact that they are in that situation at all is what make me sad. i just dont see why sexual orientation has any bearing on what you can and cannot participate in. its not like its contagious or anything...

They dont want "distracted" boy scouts. Which is why girls aren't allowed in. But at such a young age, they really shouldn't be thinking such things anyway. They also dont want gay, pedophile scout leaders doin weird junk..
gross...

They also dont want gay, pedophile scout leaders doin weird junk.. gross... Well. . . Cub Scouts maybe, but I was a Scout untill I was 18 (Eagle Scout baby), so yeah, I could see how "distractions" might be a problem. It might not be a question of sexual orientation but just plain innappropriateness. Think of it this way: say it wasn't "Boy" Scouts, but just Scouts, boys and girls allowed. I know my troop used to go camping at least once a month, if not more. Out in the woods, small tents, boys and girls in sleeping bags? Not something I would volunteer my child for. Now think about a troop that allows a known gay into the program. Almost the same situation, isn't it? It's a public relations problem. While gay does not immediately mean pedophile, a majority of people think that way. Allow a gay scoutleader, and people stop sending their children to meetings. Kids don't sign up to be Boy Scouts and the organization ceases to exist, a terible shame considering all of the virtues that it attempts to pass on to young men.

I hate that people associate "gay" with "pedophile." It's just as easy to associate "straight" with "pedophile" too though, ya know? Do the Girl Scouts get up in arms about lesbians being in the scouts? I was little when I was in Girl Scouts so I wouldn't have understood what they were talking about if there ever was, but I never remember any talk about it anyway. And if there is no problem with lesbian scout leaders in girl scouts, then it's also sad that it's just gay men who are in such a negative light all the time. The whole situation is just sad though, no matter what the "reasons" they give for it. It's just sad.

My next speech in my Public Speaking class was going to be about how to prepare for the coming apocalypse (as well as possible apocalypses that may occur, focusing mostly on zombies) But... I think she wants us to do a serious topic...
