Yo I'm part of this Korean exchange student program and we got to talking about games and they're all into Starcraft, Warcraft and Age of Empires! These guys rock.

Yeah, RTSs seem to be really popular over there... I heard you can watch Starcraft games on TV MMOs On the Hellgate: London bit, They've outrightly said it would have subscribtion based multiplayer, but I guess after hearing everybody get pissed by it, they are thinking about changing your mind. That's my guess. Which can be intrepeted as, "More delays", I bet.

Yeah. Most people on Shacknews arent pissed so much about the fact that it is subscription alone, but that everyone was kind of led along to think it was going to work like battle.net. Also, most people are willing to pay money for a FULL mmo experience, not something that is so obviously an MMO just to be greedy.
One person made a good point in compareing Guild Wars and Dungeons and Dragons online. The former created a free "almost" mmo, and is doing quite successful, while the latter tries to get a subscription fee, and is largely a failure. Hellgate apparently wants to mimic the failure : (

Why do game developers like to screw themselves over? Is there some hidden benefit for them that no one can see, or are they just corporate masochists?

Money money money.... money!
Yeah, by everything I've been reading, they seem to want us to pay a subscription to play on what amounts to be Battle.net's "Closed" servers.
I haven't been reading much. I never let myself get to into this game, because I knew something (like this, for example) would happen.
Edit: I just heard about Left 4 Dead. Stupid (stupid, stupid) title. But, the game's concept sounds awesome. Team-based cooperative multiplayer survival horror zombie shooter. Plus, its on steam.

It appears Roper/EA backed off a little from their previous statements. Sounds to me like they got wind of the fan's disgruntlement and decided to look into this whole business further. I guess we shall see.
That does sound cool. I've enjoyed Zombie mod for CS (although I hope it is a bit more in depth than that : P) so this might be something to look into.

Most everything on Steam is destined to be good. Steam wasn't made for making tons of money, after all. I mean, Darwinia and Rag Doll Kung Fu would look like financial risks to any other game publishers, imo.

That's the thing about steam, there is no risk. That's why there are so many indy games on it...
If they make no money, so what? There weren't millions of CDs copied, boxes and manuals, shipping, etc etc. In fact, you probably SAVE money if nobody downloads it, because you don't have to pay for the bandwith (I'm sure the cost of the game covers that though).

I think guildwars has the right idea: Overcharge for the game but let the customers play over and over online with others for free so every time it's a new experience

Yeah GW had the right idea. And I had a lot of fun playing it, although for me it has gotten old. It lasted quite a while, certainly long enough for a game of that price... At any rate... I got one of my younger sisters playing it now... seeing all of my old characters again made me want to play again... but I couldn't keep the mood for long. My main guy got to the part where you have to enchant your armor, or something, so the badguys can't use their instant death spell on you. It just got annoying. So many missions, strung together, with these one-hit-kill guys everywhere... and no rewards yet... It started feeling more like work then play. On top of that, I am a necromancer, and you don't exactly see many "GLF Necro" very often, if you catch my drift (An RPG where every class is as useful as the other would be a great game indeed, but I don't think thats even possible ). On top of that, to really get the most out of the game you should be in a guild, and I'm not really that type of gamer. I like pickup groups, co-operate for a while and move on. I find having friends online (in a game) that I don't know elsewhere to be annoying. People who are into that sort of thing, though, would get more out of the game then me I suspect. Oh well. Great fun while it lasted, and I would definatly recommend it to anyone interested in the Genre. Combat was tight, comparatively complex, and fast-paced, and surprisingly difficult at times. Some people hate it just because it isn't WoW, though I'm pretty sure no-one here would be like that.

You're so wrong Will. Groups looked for necros all the time, but only the ones who could recharge everyone else's mana, duuuuuh. Hell, even I loved having a good battery around when I played with my necro.

I generally played a mana battery necromancer. Then, at least, I had a selling point for groups. Although, my favorite build was of course a summoner.
I kinda miss guild wars, but it got dumb when people wouldnt let you on the pvp team unless you had the Rank 3 emote. I didnt have it, but was by no means incompetent, but you cant tell people on the internet that.

After half an hour of trying to get into another PvP match, I was like, "Whatever". PvP was fun what I got to play of it... Random team matches, it depends on who you get of course, but those could be pretty fun too. Anyway, yeah, I know battery necro's were somewhat in demand, Sarah would know better she was a blood necro, but I was lucky in that although I was building a summoner, I was a Ne/Mo (My original logic being that I'd buff my summons). So I just converted to a soul reaping healer. That got me in plenty of parties, and being a healer ain't so bad (especially when you can summon, too ). Plus our nickname "Nemo" is funny.

Damn straight! I wasn't a battery necro though. The skill doesn't work on yourself, after all. But blood mages are pretty good as team members just because they more or less don't need so much healing since they leach enemies' health with most of their skills. I'd still die if the enemies were bad enough, but at least I could keep myself alive longer than other mages could.

coudn't ever be a blood necro. I can't stand the thought of losing even one hp. and i WAS a ne/rit (W00tz all around for factions!) because being able to summon my own army and hardly doing anything to farm was a LITTLE appealing. But I'm reconsidering now that I have NightFall. I can actually become a god! Take THAT Avroz!
