I despise the Battle for Middle Earth with a passion... The voices command me to... except the ones speaking Spanish... Please tell me it's because you have read the books, love them to death, and hate how the game is unbalanced in comparison. Cuz if you do, I will hunt you down and hug you so bad.

It's true. I used to bite back when I still had braces because the bruises the metal brackets left were so worth getting my then-boyfriend pissed off at me. Yeah...anyway, I don't bite anymore.

lol dislike the books, read every one, and just couldn't bare the cliche, overdone stuff. entirely possible that this wasn't as used-up when it was written, because I can't remember when that was, yet i doubt it

Holy hell, I'm gona be hunting you down for another reason now. Tolkien served in the British army during WWI, that's how far back these books were written. And they weren't cliches, nor are they now. Tolkien created everything in those books. He practically created the entire medieval fantasy genre. And besides, what cliches are there? Elves? Dwarves? Tolkien was the first to make Elves tall and noble, and the first to make Dwarves hardy, respectable warriors. And he entirely created Hobbits. There were no Hobbits of any kind before he randomly wrote "In a hole in the ground lived a Hobbit" on a student's essay he was grading. I'm gonna cut short the ranting at this point, which is miracle in itself, ask anyone. Tolkien's not the cliche, every other person who has written medieval fantasy novels of any kind are the ones who use the genius ideas of Tolkien over and over again. </rant>

Yeah, he's the one who actually invented all of that stuff, so no it wasn't cliche then... even so, I couldn't finish the books either, but I'm going to give them a second shot.
The fact that all of it is, by now, cliche, doesn't bother me. When something is the original, I can just feel its difference... 1984, for example, which actually came out around the same time. By now, it is straightforward dystopian stuff... or the old movies like "The Good, The bad, and The Ugly" or "Seven Samurai".
It wasn't the "Dwarves, elves, orcs and wizards" ideas that turned me off from the books- I was really interested in how all of those ideas were originally conceptualized in the modern perception, which is what made me start the series in the first place- it was the sheer length of it. At the time, I didn't have the free time to invest in a long series (I was reading only short books), but now I have plenty of free time.
In the end though, to each their own. Not everyone is interested in older "classics", and I fully understand that stance. Times change and our tastes with them... so try not to attack anyone, Sarah. For facts sake, though, yes, it was Tolkien who invented all of those things. Before him, Dwarves were little leprechauns, elves were tiny little tinkerbell creatures, knights fought dragons and saved princesses, etc etc... so I would not describe his works "cliched" so much as "aged", and that's not everyone's cup of tea. Try to keep that in mind.

I wasn't attacking. I was ranting. It's different. Ranting doesn't involve a shotgun.

Alright, coming in a little late, but I also disliked the books, but for a different reason than the others. I did finish them, but it was more out of obligation than anything. I just really disliked the way they were written. They had large masses of detail that didn't relate to anything. He'd spend five pages writing about the history of some sword or horn, then never mention it again, or a page and a half describing the lineage of a minor character. It just really bothered me, because I don't care about that. I understand that he created this rich tapestry of history, but I don't need to see every singe thread to understand the image he wove.(yay crappy metaphor)

I read the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, and thought they were great. And yes, I thought they were long and a bit hard to get through as well, but it was worth it. The only one I disliked was the Silmarillion. Holy crap that is hard to read. If you had trouble with LoTR, gg Silmaril.

Not many people liked the Silmarillion as much because, since he died before he could ever fully finish it, it reads more like a text book. Nevertheless, I loved it anyway. Learning the beginnings of the races was great, especially since it takes place during a time when Elves were young and naive, and they made pleanty of mistakes because of it.
