((Sry, I've been gone...)) [rewind] Alys turned to the quivering mound of debris, leaping towards it and tearing at the wreckage frantically, "Jaakob! Please!" Finally, she spotted a hand, then an arm, and heard a young boy's pitiful moan, "Alys.... It hu'ts...." Alys smiled as she sobbed, pulling the small child from beneath the rubble, "Oh, Jaakob, I was so worried about you...." She held the boy and breathed for a moment, listening for the sounds of battle which had, strangely, dissipated. She opened her eyes slowly and began to look around, trying not to startle her little brother as she tried to understand what was happening. In the distance, she could see a battlefield of townsfolk and goblinoids, all staring in horror at the sky. Closing her eyes, she turned to see what they all feared, opening her lids slowly. "Oh, no...." she breathed, "Run." The drakes and dragon began their descent upon the town as Alys stood, dragging her wounded brother up with her. "No, sis," he complained, "Whe'e's mum an' da'?" "Run!" she hissed, dragging the boy behind her for only a few yards before the debris seemed to animate into a swirling maelstrom, the wind becoming hot and rancid with the smell of dragons. Maybe a piece of debris knocked her out, maybe she collapsed from fear, but Alys was soon unconscious, her brother huddling beside her, crying. [/rewind] When Alys first awoke, her brain hadn't yet registered what had happened. She blinked her eyes into focus, the sunlight accosting them harshly. The first thing she noticed was the smell--like burning trash, rancid and pervading. As her eyes adjusted to the light, they fell upon the remains of her home, and the events of the previous night came slowly back to her. "Jaakob? Jaakob!" "I'm right here, Alys," the boy's voice came from a few feet behind her. Turning, she saw the child sitting in the middle of the decimated plot. Alys stood and walked to the boy, glancing around at the rest of the town--the bulk of which was utterly destroyed, "Come on, we've gotta get out of here." She reached down to take his hand when she saw her mother's face in the rubble at her feet. Screaming, she jumped back, "Jaakob! Get away from that!" Jaakob regarded his sister strangely, "It's momma. She won't wake up," he mumbled, reaching down to touch her face, "I've been talking to her all morning, but she won't wake up...." he looked back to his sister, tears streaking through the dirt on his face, "Make her wake up, Alys." Watching her brother, Alys began to understand how much she would have to grow up for him. She took a breath and stood, walking towards the boy who didn't quite understand, yet, the implications of the situation. She trode carefully, to avoid the bodies of their family, and reached down to take his hand. "Come with me, Jaakob," she started, trying to figure out how she would explain this all to him, "We've got a lot to talk about, but first... First, let's see if anyone else survived." Jaakob and Alys walked in silence through their birth town, digging forlornly through the rubble and hoping to find someone, anyone else who had survived. ((And, I did okay finding Jaakob with Abishai.... Just so's ya know. )

"ugh... geez, you try to do something nice and this is how the gods repay you... pah..."
*Katt got up and streched out a bit. She made sure she had all her equiptment first, then made her way around town to see if there was anythign she could do. mosty though, the town looked totally helpless. it seemed not a building was left standing and all the people were beyond hope.*
''These poor people... what would the army want with this town anyway?"

*Jalathas wakes up to darkness and a horrible smell, like charred skunk. Feeling a pressure across his body, he realizes that he is covered in the burnt corpses of goblins, snotlings, and bugbears. tossing them off in disgust, he turns to the ruins of the town, thinking about the last night's events.*
I wonder what that was...
"I guess it doesn't matter, I sould look for survivors."
*Jalathas heads towards the town, looking with sorrow at the dead and dying around him.*

((Hmm, guess I should explain how the 15-year-old gets her equipment....))
Alys wasn't really thinking, yet, just moving on some sort of instinctual autopilot. She led her brother towards old Marghee Tanner's shop--at least, she hoped that was where they were going. The town was nearly unrecognizable, the wreckage of buildings strewn together and so far into the street, it covered the whole distance. "Wheya we goin', Alys?" "To the Tanner." "Why?" She looked to her brother, "We might have to travel on our own for a while and we're gonna need armor... Maybe some weapons to hunt with...." "Oh, oh!" he jumped, smiling, "Can you teach me how to use a bow and awoah? Da' wi'w be so pwoud when I come back and show him!" Alys looked to the child and suddenly felt very old. "Sure, kid. Anything you want." Looking back to the ground, she noticed the edge of the tanner's sign, half-buried under some debris and a bit of green goo. Sighing, she looked around, trying to recognize anything that would give her a clue as to where the rest of the shop was and, after an hour or two searching, she managed to find something. "Here ya go, squirt," she said as she plopped a huge helmet on his head. He grinned as widely as he could, "Foh me? Jus' wike a weal solda!" "Yep, just like a real soldier...." she mumbled, pulling a slightly oversized set of leathers over her simple clothes. A few more minutes of searching even yielded a small bow and a handful of arrows, but nothing else salvagable. And, so far, no one else alive.

As the few survivors begin searching through the rubble of the town, it becomes quite clear that there are VERY few survivors left.
Grazt awake with a splitting head ache. What the blazes had happened. The stench from all of the corpses littering the battlefield brought him back to his senses. DRAGON! That was what had happened. Turning he looked what was left of the town over. If there were any survivors they were going to need his help, and if not. . . there was a town full of merchandise ready to be plundered.
Why did that army attack the town though, it didn't make any sense. . . . ______________________________________________
Syntara woke with a start, he was covered in rubble which really didn't bother him, what bothered him was the fact that he was still tied up.
Oh, what a pain in the ass.
With a sigh Syntara began to telekinetically move debris from his body. ______________________________________________ Rynara slowly came awake and as she did, pain shot up her left leg. She looked down to see blood flowing freely from an open gash in her thigh.
Well, that's just wonderful, and where is my damned brother? He just left for a bit of fresh air. I'd better find out if he's okay. ______________________________________________ Drask crawled out from his hiding place, he knew he did the right thing by hiding. The noise of battle handn't lasted too terribly long, and the army hadn't stayed long. What in the world was that smel though, it was horrible. He felt for his companion Chyldra, the owl, and was comforted to feel her warm body moving under his touch. "Let me see what has happened dear friend, something is wrong here, and I need to know what it is." The owl flew up and above what was left of the devastated town and Drask let out a wail of grief. He had been too late to prevent the destruction from happening. The least he could do is try to help find survivors, and with Chyldra's eyes, that shoudn't be too difficult. ______________________________________________ The men found Syntara, he was almost totally free of the rubble, yet he was still tied. With a wolfish smile one of the men picked up a large piece of debris and brought it down on Syntara's skull, again, and again, and again.
((Let me have your charecter sheet *rip*))

((I guess someone needs to.... break the ice?))
Alys had strapped her new bow to her back and salvaged a case for the arrows before moving on to survey the damage that had been done to the rest of the town. She found a stick in the rubble and was leaning on it like a cane as she poked through the debris. Behind her toddled her little brother, holding the huge helmet on his tiny head with both hands as he tried not to trip, usually with little success. Thud. "Ow," the boy mumbled as he picked himself back up, again. "Maybe you should take that helmet off, Jaakob?" Alys started, absent-mindedly flicking a piece of wood a few feet away with her stick. "No, it's coo'! An', an'... An' you gave i' to me." She tried to smile at him, "Well, you can still carry it, duh." He didn't reply, just held the helmet tighter for a moment before stumbling, again. Alys turned and knelt, "Come on, kid," lifting the boy carefully. As he righted himself, he noticed something in the distance. "Look!" he started, pointing. Alys turned and saw a lone figure standing in the distance, a figure whose silhouette she did not recogize. Taking her brother's hand, Alys stood, approaching cautiously, "Let's go see who it is."

Drazt watched with interest as the young girl dug through the rubble. The really young one that was with her was more than a little lucky to be alive. Then again, anyone who was alive was lucky to be alive.
He instantly decided to attempt to befriend this duo. Perhaps they could help figure out why the town was attacked in the first place.
With a sigh, the half-orc trudged forward to introduce himself.

((Hmm.... The Half-Orc trudges towards the children..... Is it a menacing trudge? Cause it doesn't have to be to scare them, lol....))
Alys stepped carefully, gripping her walking stick defensively as she and her brother approached the figure who, to her suprise, began to walk toward them. As he drew nearer, she could begin to make out his features and recognized him as a half-orc, a people she had never personally dealt with, but she'd been witness to more than a few adventuring half-orcs passing through the town and their near-famous (which, by Ryndaran standards just meant the barkeep had to give you a really mean look) barfights. Pressing her hand against her brother's chest to stop him, she waited for the half-orc to approach, yelling, in her customary way, "Who goes?"
((Kinda felt like having her say, "Kneel and deliver," but I decided that was too bad.... LOL))

((that wouldn't go over too well with him))
Grazt stiffled a laugh. Here was a young human woman who interestingly enough had been approaching him, and she had guts enough to initiate contact. Not enough guts to maintain her composure completely, and it was obvious enough that the litle boy was more than a little rattled. Then again, even he was rattled.
Drazt, not the world's greatest communicater, growled out, "I am Drazt. You want find why town attacked? I help."

((She is... a little full of herself. heh And, you know, scared shytless. Is Drazt supposed to be Drask or Grazt? Or someone completely different..... The name was never used until now.))
Alys watched the half-orc carefully, almost sizing him up. "Grazt...." she mused, "Where did you come from? I don't recognize you."
As he replied, she moved to stand between this foreigner(?) and her brother, cautiously adjusting the stick in her hand. Behind her, Jaakob peeked around her side to see the half-orc. The child stared at the armor with the wonder of.... well.... a child, beaming as he stepped out from behind his sister and toddled over to the half-orc, "Tha's so neat!" Alys went to grab for the boy, but he was at the half-orc's side before she could catch him. He tugged on Grazt's armor, "Can I have awmo' like youws?"
((Aww, ain't kids cute when they're dumb?))

((You're right, it was a typo. . .fixed it. Will you fix it in your post?))
"I dunno I sleep over there." A massive hand pointed over to a completely devastated building. "It be good that I fight goblins."
The half-orc smiled down at the little boy tugging away at his armor. "I find armor you fits." Beckoning towards the battlefield behind him he continued, "There be lots out there."

((All fixed.))
Alys seemed to relax a bit as she watched the half-orc and her brother. She moved over to him and put her hand on his shoulder, pulling him back discretely. "Okay. You can come with us," she said, haughtily, as she began to make her way to the battlefield. Have to be strong, she thought, Have to protect Jaakob.... have to be strong.
((Wow.... I wonder how long until she just gets stabbed in the back....? lol))

The owl hovered overhead searching for signs of survivors. Movement caught its attention and its eyes honed in on three survivors walking back towards the battlefield.
Drask felt an instant relief, there were people left alive. He needed to talk to them, to ask them to help him search for more survivors. After all, if there were 3 survivors in a group, there could be other pockets of survivors as well.

Alys kept herself between Grazt and her brother, poking at the ground absent-mindedly with her stick. Jaakob had been jabbering ever since they started towards the battlefield. "--an' then theye was a big rock," he motioned with his arms as wide as they could be, "tha' smashed thwough tha woof," banging his hands together, he made a crashing sound, "An' Alys foun' me an' she saved me! Then--then--then--" Thud. Alys stopped and knelt, picking her little brother up, again. "Jaakob, be careful. You're gonna hurt yourself," she scolded as she brushed him off. Standing, her eyes caught the movement of a shadow on the ground. Dragons! Gasping, she turned to look at the sky, seeing a lone silhouette against the sun. She watched it flying for a moment and realised the shape and style were all wrong.... It wasn't a dragon, but a giant owl, snow-white against the sky.

Grazt walked ahead and surveyed the battlefield. Goblin's bodies were strewn everywhere and one of them had to have armor that would fit the little boy. There had to be something out here that would point them in the right direction as to why the town was attacked as well. It may be off in the tree line though, it had to be. Goblins didn't really attack towns without being told to do so, and the only attacking force that he'd seen on the battlefield was goblins and snotlings.
He casually kicked a snotling corpse out of the way and peered at the black dragon banner that was still in the snotlings arms.
Of course dragons were fighting, they'd been doing that for years, but not here. There had to be something else.
Drask summoned his companion back to him and together they began walking towards the three individuals who were approaching the battlefield. By the looks of things, one was massive, and the other two, well, they had to be children. . . Yet, the massive figure didn't look like he could possibly be a parent. What was he doing with children?
